Mission Statement

After tragically losing a colleague to suicide, and seeing the recent suicides related to other helping professionals, Derek recognized the urgent need for accessible and affordable support for depression and anxiety, and founded Mindful Mental Training Inc. Our focus is mental health prevention, and we provide Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in an online platform.

Our mission is to remove barriers that prevent people from accessing clinically supported mindfulness-based interventions, with the ultimate goal of preventing suicides.

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a form of attention and awareness training cultivated through meditation. This skillful practice teaches us to shift attention in the present moment, and suspend our automatic judgments to learn what is arising. Through this process, we learn increase our resilience by gently being with difficult thoughts, emotions, or body sensations.

The Mindfulness Skills Training with Derek Luk highlighted three major themes for implementing mindfulness in schools. The first theme is that the application of mindfulness should be a core universal teaching and integrated into all classroom settings in order to maximize the positive benefits for all students. Mindfulness needs to be immersed in a school’s culture to ensure consistent language and practices.

The second theme is that participation in mindfulness should be an invitation and not an expectation or requirement. Further, teaching staff must understand that the mediations are only a portion of the experience. Educators will need to be made aware about the importance of the guided inquiry.

Lastly, the teaching we received about how to implement mindfulness with children and youth who have experienced trauma was extremely valuable.  The importance of recognizing the population you are working with and making accommodations for individuals with trauma is advantageous in a school setting.
